Ojas (ओजस्), Sanskrit for vital energy. A ceramic matcha bowl from Pondicherry, fired three times at 1160°C in a kiln. Ash from each firing settles on the surface and bonds with the glaze. Where it lands, the texture changes. No two bowls carry the same marks.

The making

Selvan throws each bowl in a single pull. They shape the wide mouth and flared lip while the clay is still spinning. Too much pressure and the rim folds. Three rounds in the kiln seal the glaze and make it food safe. After the third firing, the kiln cools for 12 hours before they can open the door. The surface they find is never the surface they expected.

What does it feel like to hold?

The wide mouth gives your whisk room to move. The curved walls guide the matcha back to the centre. It sits in your palm without you adjusting your grip. The whole shape is designed around the motion of whisking, not just the look of it.
